NAISA is proud to announce that it is re-opening with the launch of the 22nd annual edition of the Sound Travels Festival of Sound Art which will take place at the NAISA North Media Arts Centre in South River. Featured amongst its four outdoor exhibitions this year are outdoor installations by Matthew Rogalsky and Bentley Jarvis, as well as a series of online meetups, the culmination of which will be a Community Soundscape collection for World Listening Day facilitated by Tina Pearson.  NAISA will also be launching its first edition of a Sound Travels compilation for Soundcloud and two online concert events.

Outdoor Sound Art – Installation Exhibits, June 25 – September 21, 2020

In keeping with social distancing, visitors are invited to enjoy four outdoor sound art installations at the NAISA North Media Arts Centre between 11am and 3pm every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Opening June 25, Octet, by Matthew Rogalsky, turns microphones into speakers hanging from the limbs of one of the larger trees on the property surrounding listeners with historic Canadian bird recordings by William W.H. Gunn. Opening July 30, is a new sound installation by Bentley Jarvis, which will transform the sounds of passing traffic to create a live audio experience for visitors to enjoy. NAISA invites listeners to experience Porch Radio on the building’s two porches, live-streaming NAISA Radio. Audio Bench provides listeners the opportunity to hear the Sound Travels compilation album — available through headphone jacks located at picnic tables on the lawn, where visitors can also enjoy a take out beverage or treat.

Listening Reflection Meetup series, June 27, July 6, July 18

World Listening Day is an international celebration of soundscape research and listening which occurs annually on July 18, which is the birthday of Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer whose seminal writings in the 1970’s led to the interdisciplinary field of sound ecology practiced around the world. On June 27, July 6th and July 18th Canadian Composer / Sound Artist Tina Pearson along with NAISA Artistic Director Darren Copeland will host three online meetups that will inspire exploration, reflection and sound collection of the Canadian soundscape to be included on the Radio Aporee world-wide soundmap. See naisa.ca for meet up times and guidelines for participation.

Sound Travels Online Compilation & Performances, August 15 and September 11

This first edition of the Sound Travels Online Compilation of electroacoustic sound art features fixed media works and live performance recordings on the theme of Transformation. As well as being available at soundcloud.com/naisa, and on the outdoor Audio Bench, NAISA Artistic Director Darren Copeland will present selections from these works in an online event on August 15th and September 11th at 7 pm, with the artists on hand to discuss their works with the audience.
