A disappointing end to a marathon swimmer’s attempt to swim 28 km across Lake Nipissing.

Officials say Hamilton’s Marilyn Korzekwa was two kilometres from the her destination, the shore in North Bay, when strong winds and high waves caused both dinghies and the kayak in her flotilla to overturn.

That put their occupants in the water in the dark, and turned the swim into a rescue mission and safety issue.

The fundraising swim was being done in support of NADY and the Nipissing Trackers Special Ski program.

Korzekwa started her swim at 7:16 am Wednesday from Campbells Bay near the French River.
