Local kids are taking part in a bike rodeo with city police this week.

The initiative is being run by the North Bay Police Service Youth In Policing summer students.

One is Sheldon Kilroy who tells BayToday it’s all about bicycle safety and education.

“The kids are learning a lot and we’re also getting a lot of education out to parents on how to maintain your bike and document the serial number, and overall maintain healthy habits on the road for cyclists of all ages,” he says.

Kilroy says city police have hosted the event in the past, but it’s been a few years.

“We brought it back this year and obviously we had to set up different perimeters to follow social distancing because of COVID-19 and by setting up time slots with parents registering by email,” he tells BayToday.

The rodeo is free for children ages 5-10 and runs through Friday at Lee Park and the Omischl Sports Complex, and in Callander next Thursday, July 30.
