The death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the protests that followed it carry significance everywhere, including locally.

Kaiden Peldjak is one of the organizers of a peaceful march taking place tomorrow in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

It starts at 1 pm tomorrow at Rollie Fischer Field and goes to City Hall.

Peldjak says protests like those going on in the U.S. do have significance here in North Bay.

“I haven’t faced here what I would face as a black man if I lived in America. What I don’t think people understand is that Canada still has racist problems and we can’t simply ignore that,” he says.

Peldjak says the conversation is changing following the deaths of Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless other victims of police brutality.

“With social media so prevalent, oppression can no longer hide from the public eye so it’s not a matter of what can we do but what we have to do to change this,” Peljack says.

The second event is a demonstration in support of Black Lives Matter events around the world, at 6pm at the waterfront.

North Bay Police tell BayToday they will be at both events offering assistance and support.

Officials with both events say people are encouraged to wear masks and practice physical distancing.
