Safe boating week is underway.

With marinas being reopened as part of the province’s first stage of reopening amid the pandemic, officials with the Canadian Safe Boating Association are getting the safety message out.

They remind people wear their lifejacket, pointing out that over 80% of Canadians who drown while boating were not wearing their lifejacket or not wearing it properly.

Other safety tips include boating sober, being aware of cold water risks and more.

OPP say they’re patrolling area waterways.

In 2019, the OPP in North East Region investigated five boating fatalities.
