New provincial funding and federal funding is helping support food banks, homeless shelters and individuals locally.

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, MPP Vic Fedeli has announced the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board is eligible to receive nearly $590,000 in social services relief funding in 2020/21.

He says the additional funding will help officials respond to increased demand for services and supports.

“I would like to stress that this expanded funding is intended to help a diverse range of vulnerable people in Nipissing,” said Vic Fedeli, MPP Nipissing. “This includes people living in community housing, supportive housing, people with low incomes, social assistance recipients, or others who require social services support as well as those that are experiencing homelessness.”

This funding is in addition to the base 2020-21 Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative allocation that the ministry previously provided.

“As this emergency situation evolves, we will continue to evaluate Nipissing’s needs and respond accordingly,” added Fedeli.

As well, the federal government identified $292,000 under the Reaching Home Funding to support the response capacity and prevent the spread of COVID-19 amongst those experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

That’s a total of around $880,000.
