Six North Bay Titans recently competed at provincial championships.

The Ontario Youth Junior Championship was held March 5-8 in Markham with Ayden Michaud, Chloe Popp and Julia Rivet representing the Titans.

At the same time the Ontario Swimming Championship, which has a stiffer qualifying time, was hosted at the Toronto Pan-am Sports Centre.

Representing the Titans were Jenna Wall, Sheldon Kilroy and Samuel Denomme.

This was a special weekend as it marked the last major competitions before the Olympic trials.

That meant the Titans got to witness and interact with current and future Olympians.

It was also a successful weekend in the pool for the Titans.

With a time of 1:11.36 Sheldon Kilroy set the Titans’ club record in the 100m breaststroke with teammate Samuel Denomme breaking the record two heats later.

He had a time of 1:10.12.

Jenna Wall lowered her club record in the 100m breaststroke, with all three swimmers in Toronto advancing to finals.

“This was a great stepping stone for our swimmers as they strive to get to the next level,” says Coach John Mcleod. “Swimming is a long hard season with many ups and downs and these swimmers are learning how to perform under pressure. The sky is really the limit for the Titans right now and I have never been more excited about a season like this since I started coaching 20 years ago.”

Meantime, the Titans hosted the inaugural Dominique Bouchard Invitational swim meet February 28-29 and March 1st.

Coach Mcleod’s idea behind the meet was to help bring some new competitors to the city and race the Titans.

There were preliminary races, then finals, for the first time in recent memory for the city.

There was also a $50 cash prize for both the winners of the male and female 50m Freestyle ‘skins’, or knockout series of races.

While the weather didn’t cooperate for some teams to be able to get to North Bay, the racing was competitive with 11 teams, including several university swimmers.

Highlights for the Titans include:

– Timothy Corbeil lowering his club record in the 100 backstroke
– Grace Hong winning the high-point award for 13-14 girls
– Jenna Wall winning the 50$ prize in the female 50 Freestyle ‘skins’ race with a best time of over a second

The Titans also had numerous event winners, including Owen Baas, Brooklynn Bayliss, Abigail Betsill, Albert Bouley, Emma Cook, Timothy Corbeil, Leah Dawson, Samuel Denomme, Niganii Dokis, Andrew Fuzy, Joshua Gough, Grace Hong, Emilia Lainevool, Brody Marietti, Ayden Michaud, Marlee Parker, Chloe Popp, Julia Rivet, Ryan Spencer, Drew Stephenson, Gavin Wall, Jenna Wall and Yelyzaveta Zaitseva.

“This was an exciting weekend for our team and a great chance for swimmers to showcase their efforts in front of friends and family,” says Mcleod. “I was very proud of the team spirit and the positivity the athletes had on deck and look forward to next years competition.”

The Titans also had eight swimmers recently travel to Hanmer for the second Top Fish event of the season.

The competition highlights 12 & under swimmers in the northeast.

Several Titans athletes were golden in their efforts with Beau Routley, Stefanie Moore, Isabelle Popp and Mia Ross winning one or more of their events.

“I’m most impressed with the willingness and drive these kids have to go race.  They are learning valuable lessons in our program about commitment and mastering skills and applying it in front of a larger crowd,” says Mcleod.
