Local students are being encouraged to sign up for the 2020 North Bay Regional Science Fair.

Registration is underway and one change this year is that students are allowed to register independently.

With the job action in education, Chair David Jackowski says there are unknowns about any potential impact, so they’re keeping registration wide open.

“This year we’re making sure that kids have direct access to the regional fair, in case there’s any obstacles for them.  They can just register directly with our fair if they have a project they’d like to submit,” he says.

This year’s regional fair goes Wednesday, April 1st at Nipissing University.

To register visit nbrsf.com, the registration deadline is March 20th.

Jackowski says there are plenty of awards at the regional fair and the top projects will progress to the Canada-Wide Science Fair in May in Edmonton.

“We typically send five students a year to the Canada-Wide Science Fair and from the Canada-Wide Fair you have access to International Fairs, you’ll be rubbing shoulders with a number of professors in North America and there’s a lot of scholarships available, “ he says.

In fact, Jackowski says nearly a million dollars in scholarships and prizes are accessible through the national fair.

The regional fair encourages area youth to pursue an interest in the fields of science, engineering, math or technology.

Categories include Biotechnology, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Computer and Math Science, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences.
