Expect a new book and cook book to come out of an area couple’s ‘Big Wild Year’.

Delphanie Colyer and Jeremy St. Onge tell BayToday their unique journey of only eating wild food for 365 days in 2019 was a success.

“One part of the story is all of the hunting, fishing, gathering and cooking all that wild food. No gardens, no groceries,” says St. Onge. “The other part is all the things that we gave up to do that year. No caffeine, no gluten, no dairy, no alcohol and that was the other half of the story really.”

The couple started planning and foraging in 2018 to get ready.

“It was sort of always the plan because there’s such a big interest in all of the things involved with ‘Big Wild Year’ like being self-sufficient, being food-secure, environmental things and health,” she tells BayToday.

Colyer also says there were challenges, including construction impacting areas where they previously foraged for roots, berries and mushrooms.

“This year when I went back knowing I was going to get several different kinds of foods, and then look at how others things were growing for upcoming seasons, that whole area was completely bulldozed,” she says.

Along with wild mushrooms and berries, their menu included bear, deer, moose, porcupine, raccoon and more.
