North Bay City Council is one step away from expanding the community improvement plan.

A council committee took a big step forward last week.

As we told you a couple of weeks ago, the council was looking at increasing the number of sectors that would benefit from incentives which could be renamed as the Growth Community Improvement Plan.

If passed the plan would apply to downtown, housing, industrial development and the raillands.

Councillor Marcus Tignanelli says under the plan there would be a public art grant program with incentives for the downtown and the raillands.

“It’ll be up to $500 dollars per art piece but that’s only 50 % funded. The artist will have to fund the rest of it,” Tignanelli says.

Councillor Mark King was hoping for incentives for buildings throughout the city that don’t have city services connected and came away disappointed.

“It’s highly expensive to hook up to sewer and water. $25,000 to $30,000 if you’re going to redevelop an infill site,” King says.

The committee recommendation also calls on staff to update the success of the plan by 2021.
