The city says a council committee will be discussing recommendations for diverting textile waste from the landfill at an upcoming meeting in November.

The recommendations are that the City ban the collection and disposal of textiles in the general waste stream and that staff be directed to implement an education campaign.

It would be focused on raising awareness about options for the reduction, reuse and recycling of textiles.

The average Canadian generates approximately 37 kilograms of textiles a year.

This waste stream is composed of clothing, drapes, sheets, towels, shoes and other accessories.

Currently, it is estimated approximately 1,890 tonnes of unwanted textiles is generated in North Bay on an annual basis, of which 85 per cent will be destined for the landfill.

The city says the proposed education campaign would highlight the numerous non-profit and for-profit organizations that currently exist such as charity operated reuse stores; charity operated donation containers, second hand stores, as well as on-demand curbside collection.
