The city received a $63,000 cheque from the Kiwanis Club of Nipissing last week for the Lee Park Inclusive Playground Equipment.

Plus, another $20,000 is on the way after funding was secured from another foundation, too.

“At the time of our August 15 ‘ground-breaking’ day at Lee Park, the fundraising campaign had not been finalized as we were awaiting a few other activities to conclude before this announcement could be made.  This cheque presented to the City is for our continued commitment to the families and children of North Bay,” states Kiwanis Club of Nipissing President Caleb O’Connor.  “We (Kiwanis) appreciate all of the dedication and hard work by city staff and our Kiwanis volunteers in order to revitalize this area of our waterfront.  This enhanced park is multi-generational, for children of all abilities to join parents and grandparents to create a new destination recreational space in the community.”

There’s still some work left to do with the park’s rubberized surface, fencing, landscaping and an asphalt path, so it will remain closed this season, with an official opening next spring.

A successful ‘Fill a Firetruck’ event last Wednesday at Parker’s Your Independent Grocer.

City fire officials were on hand collecting donations for the North Bay Food Bank.

1,442 pounds of food was collected along with $1,815 in monetary donations and $240 in gift cards.

“Every year we are blown away by the generosity of the folks from North Bay and surrounding area.  Thank you to Parker’s Your Independent Grocer for allowing us to ‘park our truck’ and kudos to Amber and her wonderful volunteers at the North Bay Food Bank,” said Sheri Korn, Captain of Fire Prevention.

“Once again, our community has answered the call to help put food on our shelves,” said Amber Livingstone, manager of the North Bay Food Bank. “Thanks to North Bay Fire and Emergency Services, our volunteers and everyone who made a donation; your support is appreciated.”
