North Bay City Council has no interest is taking over the administration of a bylaw governing the taxi industry from the North Bay Police Services Board.

A motion was passed to that effect last night.

It also called for the board to establish, monitoring and enforce rules for transportation network companies.

Mayor Al McDonald, a police board member and formerly a taxi cab company owner, says the new bylaw must be fair to everyone.

“I do understand the issues, At the end of the day we need to come up with something that’s fair for everyone so everyone can compete. There’s no question competition makes everyone better,” he says.

Local resident, Anthony Campigotto, a Rideshare supporter, says the bylaw must be fair so there’s plenty of competition and he’s already seeing that since a Rideshare firm started operating in North Bay a couple of weeks ago.

“Not just for Rideshare either. I’ve heard reports of how the taxis have improved their service. This to me is the natural quick evolution of healthy competition in an industry,” he says.

We’ll find out next month what the new bylaw will look like.
