Residents in four provinces will pay a bit more money starting today to gas up their cars, heat their homes, grill a burger, and fly in a plane.

The federal government’s carbon tax takes effect this morning in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick.

The tax adds over four cents to a litre of gasoline and to a cubic metre of natural gas, while also driving up the cost of propane, butane, and aviation fuel.

Here in North Bay the price for a litre of regular gas jumped to about $1.23 at some gas stations overnight.

Others, at last check, were still just under $1.18.
