There were no injuries after a house fire on the 200 block of Kingsway Avenue this morning, with smoke visible around 9 am.

Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders tells BayToday they got in and quickly snuffed the fire out.

“Suspected cause is careless smoking,” he says. “(The fire) appears to have started in a piece of furniture in the living room and extended into the home. Unfortunately when fire gets into a home it tends to spread behind the walls.”

Saunders says a woman was at home at the time and got out safely thanks to a city public works crew that was on the scene at the time.

“Damage is not significant, but she won’t be able to be in the home for a little while,” he says.

The road was closed off at the corner of Kingsway and Queensway for time.
