With all the snow we’ve received this winter, North Bay Fire and Emergency Services has a request for residents that may have a fire hydrant on their property.
Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders tells BayToday it’s the responsibility of city public works to clear snow from hydrants, but they’ve certainly had their hands full this year.
“If you do have a hydrant on your property, if you can help us out and try and keep it clear, obviously in the event of an emergency it’s going to expedite our fire suppression operations,” he says.
So far there hasn’t been an impact this winter.
“It’s harder to access a hydrant in the winter then it is in the summer, it hasn’t affected our firefighting operations yet, but it certainly has the potential to,” Saunders says.
He also points out homeowners can be charged if snow being cleared from the driveway is piled onto a hydrant.
