An extreme cold warning is in effect for the North Bay area and we’ve broken a temperature record today already.

Extreme wind chills of minus 40 to minus 50 are expected across much of the north.

Environment Canada says the arctic air mass will stick around for much of the week.

At 4 am the thermometer plunged to minus 35.4 at the airport.

That’s colder than the previous record of minus 32.2 set back in 1971.

School transportation officials advise the extreme cold has resulted in ALL school buses being cancelled across the Nipissing, East and West Parry Sound Districts.

Schools remain open.

(UPDATE) Still with the weather, there’s snow on the way.

A special weather statement has been replaced by a snow fall warning (11:28 am)

Snow, at times heavy, will develop later this afternoon or early evening and continue into tomorrow morning.

Total snowfall amounts of 15 to 20 cm are possible.

Also this morning, over 7,200 Hydro One customers in the area were without power for a couple hours.

Most were in the Commanda area with some in the Powassan, Trout Creek, Nipissing Township and South River areas.

The last of the outages were cleared around 9 am.
