Today (October 10th) is World Homeless Day and local officials are asking residents to reflect on the impact not having a stable home has on individuals and families.

Recently the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB) provided a “snapshot” of homelessness locally, which indicated 182 people are experiencing homelessness in the district.

This included individuals who were absolutely homeless to those precariously housed, such as people who are couch surfing.

If you or someone you know is experiencing homelessness, the following services are available in the Nipissing district:

  • Low Income People’s Involvement (LIPI) of Nipissing’s Homelessness Prevention services. For more information please visit LIPI’s website at lipinipissing.com
  • Shelters: Crisis Centre North Bay Four Elms, Nipissing Transitional House, Ojibway Women’s Lodge and Horizon Women’s Shelter
  • Food programs: The Salvation Army, The Gathering Place, Open Arms Café and local Food Banks
  • DNSSAB’s CHPI Household Benefits program, which can assist eligible households with costs such as Rent Arrears, Hydro Arrears and Last Month’s Rent. For more information, please visit the DNSSAB’s website at dnssab.ca
