The race is on for North Bay’s next city council.

Election day is October 22nd and there are now 5 candidates for mayor Will Bizzon,Sheldon Forgette, Gary Gardiner, Mike Guillemette and the incumbent Al McDonald.

There are 26 candidates for council including 8 incumbents.

With Forgette running for mayor only 1 incumbent Daryl Vaillancourt chose not to run.

Clerk Karen McIssac says the candidates still have to certified.

“We will check to see they’re on the voters list and check to ensure there’s nothing that would disqualify a candidate. If there is they will be notified and the decision is final, ” she says.

She says certification will be at 4 pm on Monday.

McIssac says the candidate must be on the voters list and must live in the community or rent or own property in the city. Another condition is to have the spouse own property in the city.

But there’s another example too of a candidate filing and then not be certified.

“We could become aware of a fraudulent election practice so there’s a number of issues that could come forward that would disqualify someone,” McIssac says.
On the school board side, there are 19 running to be trustee: 8 for the Near North District School Board, 4 for the Nipissing-Parry Sound District Catholic School Board, 4 for the French Catholic School Board and 3 for the French Public School Board.

In Callander, there’s no mayor’s race as incumbent Hec Lavigne is the only candidate.

There are 9 candidates for council though.

Two incumbents are not running for re-election Virginia Onley and Heather Busch.
