Nipissing First NationNipissing First Nation will have a new chief on July 10th.

That’s when the next leader will be elected.

Chief Marianna Couchie is not running for a 4th term.

She has chosen to spend more time with her family.

Couchie says she won’t be supporting one of the six candidates for chief officially during the campaign.

She says a lot has been accomplished over the last 9 years but it’s been accomplished by  herself, the administration, the council and the staff.

Couchie says there have been some changes including a land treaty agreement, a day care centre, a constitution and having solar technology in their buildings.

But she says challenges remain like the future of Lake Nipissing and that just doesn’t include the fishery thanks to the work of the Lake Nipissing Summits.

Chief Couchie says there are efforts to re-brand the lake as a destination place which includes fishing but includes other activities too.

As well, there are 24 candidates for 7 council spots. The advance poll voting is on July 4th.
