Maurice Maeterlinck was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911 “in appre- ciation of his many-sided literary activities, and especially of his dramatic works”. This classic “symbolist” play (his second) deals with humankind’s conflict with preternatural forces, against which we are powerless. It was first performed in Paris in May, 1891.
