 Eau Claire Gorge Guided Hike

Explore one of Ontario’s most historic and scenic Conservation Areas on July 28 as the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority hosts a free guided hike at the Eau Claire Gorge Conservation Area. The hike runs from 9:30 am to 11 am. The most spectacular scenic feature is the Gorge itself, where the Amable du Fond flows between sheer rock walls in a dramatic series of rapids and waterfalls. Below the Gorge the river widens and winds its way through a cluster of islands before flowing into Smith Lake. Guiding the 1.5 hour hike this year is photographer and visual artists Liz Lott. The theme of the hike is “Nature and Photography: Discover nature through the camera lens” Bring your camera, phone, DSLR or manual camera.

Need a ride? A limited number of seats are available on a bus that departs from North Bay at 8:15 am from 1881 Cassells Street (at New Ontario Brewery). Reserve a seat on the bus by calling 705 474-5420. Or meet us there!
 

NBMCA’s Mattawa River Canoe Race

Race with the pros or join the recreational paddlers as they paddle and portage their canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards 64 km from Trout Lake, North Bay to the Mattawa Island Conservation Area.  The scenery is spectacular, the portages are challenging, the pride of accomplishment earns you bragging rights for following in the historic wake of Voyageurs who followed the path of the Huron and Ojibway as they travelled this Heritage River enroute between the Great Lakes to the Gulf of St. Lawrence.  A 13 km family and youth race launches from Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park, joining the finish line at Mattawa Island (with only 1 portage) to give beginners and up-and-coming paddlers a taste of the river and the race.
