The Rotary Club of North Bay has recognized 6 local high school students for putting service above self, which is the motto of Rotary International.

Youth Committee chair Henry Drenth says these young people send us a positive message of volunteering and giving back to the community.

He says these young people inspire others to volunteer.

“It pulls in others. Some of these students jump right in and volunteer for various organizations in the community and others follow. It’s fantastic.”

Sydney Pullen-Vautour of Odysee says she was inspired to volunteer by her father.

“He helps anyone. If there’s an old man walking across the street who needs help he’ll help him cross. I got my helpfulness from my dad.”

Other recipients include Kate Sherry of Widdifield, Katie Schankula of West Ferris, Anthony Vacheff of Chippewa, Jacob Szaranski of St Joseph-Scollard Hall and Nicholas Daguerre of Algonquin.

Sherry says she likes helping people.

“I have so much and others don’t have as much. I don’t think that is fair or right. I would like to give it all to other people.”

She says she sees people who have a need and she wants to help them.

The Rotary Club of North Bay on Monday presented each student with a certificate and a cheque for $100.
As well, a plaque recognizing each recipient will be displayed at the students school.
