Due to the success of an integrated high tech program, a North Bay school is receiving recognition from a major Technology company.

West Ferris Intermediate and Secondary School has been named an Apple Distinguished School.

Brent Yacoback is the program lead for the STEAM program at the school which integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

He says the program is unique.

“So you’re not just taking Math in a Math classroom, you’re integrating that with what you’re doing in your Science classroom, what you’re doing in your Tech design class and what you’re doing in English,” Yacoback says.

He says Apple recognizes schools that use Apple products and the second part is that they’re being used to maximize student learning.

“It’s a pretty exciting day for us to get this information from Apple and kind of a culmination of several years of hard work building up the STEAM program,” he adds.

Yacoback says the main benefit of the STEAM program is it prepares students for the future.

The program started in 1992.
